I’m not very fond of Husqvarna shotguns but since I get fairly many questions regarding Husqvarna shotguns from people outside Sweden. Here’s some information you might find useful.
When military orders dropped after the Danish-Prussian War of 1864 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, Husqvarna begun making shotguns and hunting rifles. They also started manufacturing stoves, sewing machines and bicycles. In 1903 Husqvarna made their first motorcycle.Husqvarna continued firearms production, though mostly civilian firearms except during the two world wars and some.
Husqvarna manufactured the Model 1900 in the HVA Gunworks, serial numbers 307 Then FFV/Carl Gustaf bought the Gunworks and continued to manufacture the 1900 under the FFV designation. Approx 60000 were made from 1970 -1979, serial numbers 300, missing out large chunks of the numbering system. Most other parts have the last three figures of the serial number. (Except for carbines with four-digit serial numbers, on these the other parts only have the last two figures in the serial number). Parts on Husqvarna made rifles are not numbered to the same extent as on rifles made by Mauser or Carl Gustaf. Husqvarna 640 - Z46145 8x57Js; 96% blue, very good+ bore, excellent stock, 24' barrel, Manufactured between 1944 1953 The front sight is a ramped blade and the rear sight is a fixed U notch. The top of the receiver is fitted with scope mounts. The top of the barrel is.
But to start with: there are no proof laws in Sweden, never has been any and by the looks of it will never by any either. So there are no valid Swedish proof marks either. The marks you find on a shotgun is made by Husqvarna factory in production as productions marks when the gun was made. Or later when proofed elsewhere.
The model is normally marked in the action flats, but not always. Since Husqvarna stopped producing shotguns in 1977 there were a short flush in time when everyone i Sweden should own at least one Husqvarna gun, the prices went up and not so few guns was renovated at the Husqvarna factory or even “upgraded” to a higher grade with the result that there are some guns that has started of as a lower grade, with some strange specifications that doesn’t match the factory records.
And one thing you know about Husqvarna is that you just don’t know for sure. The number of guns that is made out of the specifications is unknown, but there are quite a few of those odd guns out there. Guns that according to specifications shouldn’t exist. So there are a lot of guns that is “made to specific order” or later “renovated” that makes the model tricky to point.
More details about Husqvarna shotguns can be found in the book:Husqvarna Hagelvapen 1877-1977 - but only in Swedish sorry to say.

Stamps & Proof marks for Husqvarna
The only mark that one can call “proof mark” on a HVA gun is the stamp for having passed the test made at the factory. It’s a old logo for the factory.
Other stamps that one find is normally the following:
12 or 16 or 20 is the caliber/gauge
Numbers as 18,5 is normally the barrel internal diameter in mm
One or two letters from B to Y is the finishers mark, se table above
A crown is the stamp for the final check at the factory:
CHOKE normally means full choke on that barrel.
Triangle with a V means that the barrel material in the barrel has been worked with in cold state:
Numbers as 1310 or m1310 or m/1310 (or similar corresponding numbers to models) are normally the model, but in some odd cases these can be mistaken for caliber such as for the hammer gun m/20.
Example on barrel:
Barrels from a m/310 gun in gauge 12, gun finished by Claes Johansson
Example on action flat:
Action flat on a m/310 CS with number 174983, gun finished by Claes Johansson.

Note L between the actions flats - that is the mark of the action maker (passare in Swedish). Most of these marks are unknown today, at least by me. A funny one of these are called “the dot” (punkten in Swedish) since his mark was just a dot.
Chamber-length
Husqvarna was one of the first companies that to adopt to 2 3/4” (or 70mm) chamber length as early as 1937, as a general rule all guns after 165 000 have the longer chamber - some guns before might be 2 3/4” but most are 2 ½”.
Swedish Civilian & Sporting Firearms
Choke
As many older guns older Husqvarna - before 1960’s - are normally heavily choked and normally performs best with Eley GrandPrix or other cartridges with fibre or paper wad. Modern cartridges with plastic wad might give extremely tight and uneven pattern.
Quality and other things
The golden rule for Husqvarna when it comes to quality is “as early as possible, and as high grade as possible”. A 310 is almost in every aspect better than the later models.
A C-grade gun is better than a A-grade gun, it’s not only engraving that differs.
But never the less - Husqvarna is rather German in their style, so one should not expect the guns to be lively in their characteristics. The barrels are normally rather heavy which give a rather slow but stable swing.

Hello all, this is my first post, and there seems to be alot of knowledgable users here on the subject. I have a husky 30-06 rifle, i believe it to be a 1640.
I read somewhere that the 1640 husqvarna says husky on it, mine does not, dont know if thats an automatic disqualification for it being a 1640. Serial number 1377XX It says nitro on the barrel, has the crown stamped on the receiver and on the butt plate. On the rifle it says husqvarna vapenfabriks. Has the wing safety or whatever its called ( going to have to remove that and have a sport safety for a scope,im assuming.
I would like to know the model, the year of its production, and where can i find mounting base for this? Thanks so much for the help! This thing is realy, really accurate.
Hello and welcome to the forum. If you could post some photos that would be helpful, but just from your description we can narrow things down. Your rifle was made in 1952 and is either a Model 640 or a Model 1000 or 1100.
The wing safety was a feature of the Husqvarna rifles built using an FN Mauser 98 commercial action. The model 640 used the older type of FN action and the 1000/1100 had the newer type. The difference in the models will be from stock differences. On the 1640 series the safety was moved to the trigger and is a sliding type on the right side of the stock.
Here is some info gleaned from the 'Fire' and and other forums. It does appear to be short of some of the calibres available for each model. But rest assured, if you buy a 1600/1640 you will be buying one of the nicest, smoothest 98 actions available - period. And in a rifle that may be over 50 years old! They shoot, the triggers are easily worked, and if you get the 1600, are very lightweight.
Husqvarna Rifle Serial Number Dates
The FN action you are looking at is probably a 640 rather than a 1600 or 1640. The basic difference between the 1600 and 1640 is barrel length and the 1640 is usually slightly heavier. 'Husqvarna basically used only four different mauser-type actions. The Swedish Mauser model 94 - Used from 1927 to 1949 After WW2 it was called model 38, it also lost the thumb cut-out. The German Mauser model 98 - Used from 1937 to 1956 Made by FN in Belgium in two types, the main difference is that the new type doesn't have the thumb cut-out and that the bolt handle is swept slightly back. Husqvarna model 1640/1640 - Husqvarna was not comfortable with the fact that they were depending on one of there competitors.

So they developed an action that in some ways resembles the German Mauser model 98. It uses a long mauser 98 type extractor and mechanical ejector but got a sliding safety catch. It was released in 1953 and discontinued in 1967.
Husqvarna model 1900 - In 1967 Husqvarna released a new action. It uses short modern extractor and ejector.

It got a small extra guiding-lug on the lower locking-lug. The cocking-piece got a new shape and looks like the one on the present Carl Gustaf 2000 rifles. Since 1950 Husqvarna have mainly used cold-hammer forged barrels. Virtual dj 9 free. download full version. JC Higgins 51-L rifles are also built on the HVA action.
